There will be pictures of the yarn to be won soon and yes I hand dyed it myself. It is purple, red,and pink. The color changes aren't very drastic and it looks very nice. The colors are pretty bold but the fade in areas. I will find out more about the yarn because it was gifted to me so I don't quite know all of its details.

  1. My best knitting secret is, when I mess up and don't want to frog back, I fake it by overlaying the error with the correct pattern in duplicate stitch. It works for anything except lace.

  2. My best knitting secret is keep a few projects going so if I get bored with one I can work on another for a while then go back to it. For example, I made my first pair of socks recently and it does get boring working the same pattern over and over for the leg or foot of the sock so I did a few east quick dishcloths to take a break from the socks.

  3. My best knitting secret:

People wonder how I keep so many hobbies on the go (knitting, spinning, crochet, quilting...)

The secret is just to work at things often... even if you only have a few minutes. I knit when I am waiting in lines, or when I am a passenger in the car. I design patterns and map out ideas when I have a spare minute or am talking on the phone. In the morning when I am waiting for my turn in the shower I might predraft a handful of fiber, or drum card a bat. At work on a break I might hand sew a few pieces of fabric or cut out a few pieces.

My secret to getting lots accomplished is just to work often, and use up the otherwise wasted time. I knit 8 pairs of socks to give away for Christmas last year just knitting in the car on my commute.

Remember - a few rows/stitches makes all the difference :)

  4. My best Knitting secret:
I made myself a binder for all those wonderful patterns you find on the internet and want to save for a rainy day. It has page protectors for each pattern, tabs to organize the type of pattern and charting paper in the back if necessary.
The page protectors are nice because not only do they keep the pattern, clean and flat, it allows me to mark my progress on the chart with a dry erase marker that will wipe off with a little Windex.

  5. Hmm..I have a couple favourite tidbits...

    1) Sock Secret - I always go down a size needle when knitting the cuff. It makes the cuff look nicer and helps it hold up the sock better (imho).

    2) Audiobooks are fantastically awesome, but you need to corrolate the mental attentiveness required by the book and the pattern (aka easy books with hard patterns, tougher books for easy patterns).

    3) More of an addendum to Jolene, knitting in the car is really a lot easier than you would think. Don't let it distract you, but you can get several stitches in at a stop light!

  6. Thank you for the comments so far! I actually have made a pattern binder like Monica's myself one side is for knit patterns nad one side is for crochet patterns. I also have one binder designated to socks alone.

  7. My tip is to take advantage of great videos on youtube.com. Whenever I have a new stitch I want to learn I will look up a video and follow along. I set my laptop in front of me and then hold my needles and yarn in front to work the stitch along with the video. Pause and rewind work great, too.

  8. My knitting secret is like the other poster I have some binders with patterns. I keep them in the plastic sleeves when I am using a pattern I make a copy of it and put the original back in the binder in case I lose the pattern I am working on. Another secret I have my sister to crochet things together for me since I can't crochet.

  9. My best secret when is for when Im making socks. I always make them cuff down, and on dpn's. I will cast on, using 2 needles held together. This ensures that I don't cast on too tightly so that the top of my cuff is just as stretchy as the rest.

My secret is I make a lot of mistakes and I am glad that I can go and find help on Ravelry, but seriously when I make socks from the cuff down I put a safety pin at the bottom once I have about 3 rows so that my stitches won't turn and be working inside out. Also, I found using more stitch markers helps when I am making a lacy pattern to keep each section to itself. This helps me so that I won't screw up the pattern for that row.

A good idea when making two socks at a time with circular needles when you are new is to take the same size needles but different colors or different color flexible cord so that you can keep front and back seperate.

  11. My knitting secret is that I keep a rubber band around each pair of knitting needles that I own. I keep them in a large container and it would take forever to try to sort them. So I rubber banded them. Now when I reach for one size 6, both needles come together. It saves a lot of time trying to hunt down needles.

I also keep all of my crochet hooks in their original packaging so that I have the complete set at my disposal and just have to pick out the one that I need. I am meticulous at keeping it all together because I could lose far too much time hunting them down.

Since I have a tendency to knit or crochet too loosely, I usually go down one size from the size needle or hook that is recommended so that my item stays to gauge.

  12. My knitting secret:

When I have to change to a new ball of yarn (either a new color, or I've gotten to the end of the ball), I never have to weave in ends. What I do is I either knit with both balls at once (if it's the same color), or I knit with the new end and carry the old color along the back, serving the same purpose as "weaving in" the ends! Stripes are no problem for me :D

I also make use of the felted join when I'm knitting with feltable wool - I knit a 7-foot-long striped scarf, and had to weave in TWO ends total - the caston and the bindoff.

  13. My knitting tip is that I always keep each project (and everything else I need for it...) in it's own project bag. This way, when I go to leave the house, I can easily grab a bag of my knitting and be on my way. Another bonus: It allows me to have a bunch of different project bags! :)

  14. I have a few secrets that make my knitting life easier:

If I have made a mistake and don't notice it until I am further into my knitting, I take a different color yarn and yarn needle and thread it through each chain below the booboo. When I rip out, I don't lose any stitches and it is easier to put back on the needle and I don't have to rip out more than I need to.

Also, I, too have my web patterns in a sheet protected binder (I have 5 full ones!), but I also cannot part with my knitting subscriptions, so they, too are in magazine boxes by season. That way if I want a cool summer top or sweater, it is in the boxes labeled summer, etc.

    Thanks for the contest!

  15. Here are some of my secrets

Learn to knit backwards for entrelac/shortrows/400+ st of flat stockinette.

Learn to cable without a needle.

    Lifelines aren't just for lace.

Use an extra circ or waste yarn for a stitch holder. Don't bother with those commercial jobs, they just stretch your stitches.

Use the itty bitty rubberbands from the haircare section for stitch markers.

    There are no knitting police.

  16. My secret is to not be afraid. Try something new! It may turn out great. Or it may not and that's okay. You can learn something new from each experience. It's only yarn, it's not going to explode if you do it incorrectly or differently than the pattern stated. :o)
